While the iPhone OS 4.0 is still in beta and will not be available for public until this summer, the infamous iPhone Dev team has already figured out a jailbreak solution and released Redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA for the beta OS.

But please take note.

This beta software is not designed for general iPhone users. As mentioned by the iPhone Dev team, this beta redsn0w is intended for developers behind those jailbroken apps to fix their software before the general public gets iPhone OS 4.0 this summer.

So, if you are not a developer, this jailbreak tool is not for you. Stay away from upgrading to iPhone OS 4.0 beta even you got the IPSW. The beta OS is still buggy and not ready for general use, plus you will lose carrier unlock after upgrading.

On the other hand, if you are a developer for jailbreak application, you can follow the below procedures to jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0 beta (assume that you’ve updated the iPhone with iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw):

  1. Make sure you’ve already activated your iPhone3G with iTunes and your developer UDID
  2. Launch the beta redsn0w 0.9.5
  3. Select your stock iPhone1,2_4.0_8A230m_Restore.ipsw file (you’ve already used this to update your iPhone3G to 4.0beta1)
  4. Select "Install Cydia" and click "Next". Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.
  5. When your iPhone3G comes back up, you’ll notice Cydia has a blank white icon (we told you many things were broken right now!) You’ll also notice Cydia has no sources. Go to the Sources panel and add this repo: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7 (be sure you have a carrier or wifi signal first!). When Cydia restarts, you should see its real logo now, and the standard sources should be ready to use.

For now, redsn0w 0.9.5 beta is available for Mac OS X only and supports iPhone 3G running iPhone OS 4.0 beta1. To download the redsn0w jailbreak tool, you can further check out the development portal of iPhone Dev team.

Rally Up: Location-Based Social Networking on the iPad

Posted: 16 Apr 2010 02:45 AM PDT

Location-Based Social Networking has well and truly arrived on the iPad, courtesy the Rally Up iPad app. The app is available for free from the iTunes Store and offers the same functionality as Rally Up’s iPhone app. Privacy has been a major concern for other popular location based services including Foursquare, Gowalla and others. However, Rally Up seems to have done its homework well on the Privacy aspect.

It allows you to only friend other people who are on using the app. Integration with Twitter seems to be left out intentionally in order to promote the use of Rally Up as a microblogging application as well as a location based social network. It integrates with Facebook though and the app allows you to send updates to your Facebook friends.

Adjustable Privacy

As I mentioned earlier, Privacy is a crucial aspect of any Location-based service and Rally Up allows a user to adjust their privacy settings. A friend slider offers 4 modes – real, feed, lurk and mute, which control what information is exchanged between you and your friend. A ‘real’ friend is someone who can see your check ins and in turn, you’ll see their check ins. A friend on ‘mute’ will not receive your updates. Cool, isn’t it?

iPad’s Massive Screen

The app makes full use of iPad's increased real estate and looks much better on the iPad as compared to the iPhone. The map-based canvas ensures that users go through minimal screen changes and provides enhanced browsing capabilities. The iPad offers fantastic support for popping information and overlaying things on the same screen and these capabilities are fully utilized by the Rally Up app.

iPad WiFi + 3G Models

It’s unsurprising that there are not many location based apps available for the iPad, primarily because these are more suited to the iPad WiFi + 3G models which are yet to be launched by Apple. The WiFi only iPad relies on a triangulation technique to pinpoint a user’s location and is not as accurate as 3G.

Wrap-up

As per Rally Up’s co-founder Sol Lipman, the app is all about connecting to your ‘real’ friends and respecting your privacy. From what I’ve seen off the app so far, it caters to both these requirements. I’d recommend you try it out. I’ll be happy to hear your opinion about the Rally Up iPad app.
